Eye Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective form of therapy that has shown promising results in treating anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

It helps people reprocess traumatic memories and reduce the associated distress.
It is based on the theory that traumatic experiences are stored in the brain as memories, and that these memories are stored in the emotional parts of the brain. These memories can cause symptoms such as flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, and excessive emotional reactions. EMDR helps decrease these symptoms.

How does it work?

When we experience a trauma, our brains cannot process the experience correctly. This can make us feel stuck in the past and have difficulty moving on. This type of therapy enables us to reprocess the experience to see it in a new light and develop a more positive perspective.

So how does it work?
It is based on the idea that our brains are naturally able to heal from traumatic experiences. However, sometimes the healing process gets stuck, and we need some help to get it going again. That's where EMDR comes in.

What Happens During the Session?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing work by helping the brain to process and heal from trauma. It is carried out by a trained therapist who will guide you through the process. During the sessions, you will be asked to think about the traumatic event while performing bilateral stimulation, such as moving your eyes from side to side, tapping on your knees, or listening to sounds. This stimulation helps to activate both sides of the brain and allows for new processing to take place. The therapist will also help you identify any negative beliefs you have about yourself as a result of the trauma and work with you to challenge these beliefs.

You'll then talk about your trauma and what happened while the therapist guides your eye movements. These eye movements help reduce the negative feelings associated with your trauma so that you can start to process and make sense of what happened. The therapist will also help you practice coping mechanisms and skills to better deal with your triggers and emotions related to the trauma.

After the session, you will debrief with the therapist about what happened during the session and how you are feeling. The therapist will also provide tools to help you deal with any residual distress you may feel.
